Lacrosse is a competitive sport, and it requires a great deal of skill, technique, and athletic ability. College Park has an excellent team, and to maintain the skill level there is a bunch of preseason work. Preseason starts in the beginning of November, well ahead of the actual season in February.

Twice a week is Captains’ Practice. Captains’ practice is for all players old and new. It is a great opportunity for new players to learn the basics. Captains help them learn the basic techniques of catching, throwing, and cradling. One main thing of captains practice is to learn how to hit the wall. Repeatedly hitting the wall works out all the kinks and errors in one’s throwing motion. Standing close to the wall enables a player to learn soft-catching; a technique essencial to be a star player. At captain’s practices drills often at varsity practices are used, to prepare junior varsity and frosh players for the grueling varsity team.

In addition to the skill work, there is also conditioning. It is very helpful to start the season in shape, so everyone is good and has stamina right off the bat. Another opportunity to gain endurance and become strong is training classes. The girl’s lacrosse program has a connection with one trainer named Amy. She hosts a workout class near pump it up in Concord. There are classes twice a week that most players attend. At these training sessions one can expect to work out all parts of the body. You will definitely be sore after, but the results are worth it.
