What is STUNT?

By Stephanie Hesselroth 03/03/2020, 7:00am PST

These CPHS Lady Falcons have started their THIRD year of participation in this Varsity women’s sport! They beat Las Lomas 19-2 and Acalanes 21-1 in back-to-back games on Friday night, but are still being asked, “What’s STUNT?”

Team Managers: Allison Azevedo, Madison Helms (not pictured) Alexis Minnis

Athletes Alphabetically:  Madison Del Vecchio (14), Jordynne Hesselroth (36),

Jenna Lynn (27), Brooklyn Newens (19), Haley Olson (26), Hannah Price (3), Sara Schoen (9), Renee Speer (1)

In California, CIF (the California Interscholastic Federation) recognizes Competitive Sport Cheer (CSC) AKA STUNT as a Spring season sport. High school teams first starting playing the fast growing sport in 2014.  STUNT was created by USA Cheer so that the athletic and technical skills acquired by female cheerleaders and gymnasts could be used in a competitive sport that meets Title IX requirements for intercollegiate sports.

STUNT teams learn pre-set routines of various levels of difficulty, 1 – 6, performed head-to-head against an opponent on a playing field.  There are four quarters in the game, played to upbeat music. The first three quarters consist of 4 rounds each. Quarter 1 is “Partner Stunts,” followed by “Pyramids and Tosses” in Quarter 2. After a halftime break is the 3rd Quarter of “Jumps and Tumbling.” The 4th Quarter, “Team Routine,” consists of three rounds in which a routine is created by the skills of the same level performed in this order:  Partner Jumps, Jumps and Tumbling, Pyramids and Tosses.

Confused? An easier way to understand STUNT is to come out and watch it! There are six more game nights left in Diablo Athletic League play, and teams play twice at the same location each Friday. College Park will be hosting 4 games on Friday, March 13th, as our SENIOR NIGHT.  Come support CPHS playing against CVCHS at 5pm and against Alhambra at 8pm!  Go Lady Falcons!
